OUR WORK

THE NEED

Over 20 million Ugandans lack access to a clean water source, resulting in negative health, social, economic, and environmental consequences.

HEALTH

Water borne illnesses like diarrhea remain a leading cause of death for children under the age of five, exceeding deaths from either malaria or AIDS. Lack of safe water also leads to malnutrition and prevents recovery from treatable diseases like pneumonia. Pneumonia is also caused through indoor air pollution, which can be a result of boiling water.

SOCIAL

The responsibility of securing drinking water falls disproportionally on women and children, taking away valuable time that could be spent contributing to the economy or going to school.

ECONOMIC

Acquiring drinking water is an expensive investment across Uganda, whether boiling water or purchasing costly bottled water. Treating water borne illness is an additional expense arising from the lack of safe water.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Clearing forests to provide firewood to boil water contributes to the rapidly growing deforestation of Uganda and increases CO2 emissions and smoke inhalation in homes.

Health Centers

Uganda is one of the largest refugee hosting countries in the world. Together with our implementing partners, we have installed over 7,000 filters in refugee settlements, both at the household and institutional level. These installations were made possible by the ground support of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and Youth Integrated Development Organisation (YIDO).

In Uganda many schools lack the money and resources to provide students with access to safe water during the school day. Through our Filters for Schools Program, SPOUTS Impact has installed filters in over 80 schools throughout Uganda, providing over 32,000 students with safe water.

The Community Program is a full coverage approach to installing the Purifaaya water filters in a community such that students have access to safe, clean water everywhere they go. We coordinate with local health, religious, and political leaders to introduce the filter and show the community the process for treating their water. Purifaaya filters are installed in households, schools, health centers and places of worship.

Moving forward we will be focusing our community model in Mityana, Mubende and Kassanda Districts, our Filters for Schools in Kampala and Wakiso Districts, and Refugee settlements of Kyangwali and Kyka.
